NBPA Foundation announces $100,000 grant in support of continued Hurricane Dorian relief efforts
New York, NY (February 19, 2020) - The National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) Foundation is excited to announce a $100,000 grant, as part of continued relief efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian, to the SBP, a national disaster resilience and recovery organization founded in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Working with the SBP, the NBPA Foundation’s $100,000 grant will be split evenly for home rebuilding efforts in Freeport and the rebuilding of the Grand Bahamas Children’s Home.
The NBPA’s connection to the Bahamas stems partially from its players, several of whom either grew up there or have strong ties to the Caribbean nation. During Hurricane Dorian, these players along with many of their teammates were instrumental in raising awareness and leading fundraising efforts to provide relief for those in need. The NBPA Foundation supported these efforts by matching player donations toward Hurricane Dorian relief work. Additionally, for the past two years, the Bahamas has hosted players and NBPA staff for the annual NBPA winter meeting and One Court experience.
“In the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Dorian, it was great to see our players come together to help those affected by the storm. Since then, we as a foundation have remained committed to the long-term recovery efforts in the Bahamas and we hope this grant will contribute to the rebuilding efforts that are still on-going around the country.”
